Our work

Developing a central hub for Māori learning resources

Kauwhata Reo

Project background

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has always been dedicated to meeting the needs of their te reo Māori learners, who were requesting a central hub for te reo Māori teaching and learning resources that reflected the values of the intended audience as well as captured how that audience interacts with online resources. The MOE approached Silverstripe to support their internal team with the development work on this new opportunity.

Project scope

At the start of the project, it became clear that MOE not only needed development work, but that they needed further support from Silverstripe with the design and backlog management of the site. Māori language tools need to be led by Māori language experts, and so bringing the parties together to collaborate on the design meant that we were able to meet the requirements and deliverables of both the Ministry but also the various stakeholders. When the designs for the front-end evolved mid-project, we built on the illustrations provided by Māui Studios and created a site that is truly reflective of the authentic Māori world.

We were able to successfully support the MOE team to deliver a number of complex features for Silverstripe CMS. Taking advantage of the modular content structure of content blocks allowed us to build in new features that use audio content and pull in multiple teaching resources into a single, nestable area of the page. It also allowed us to implement a level of animation and movement on the homepage that brings the site to life.

Key outcomes

Silverstripe was able to transform the artwork into a digital masterpiece that proudly represents the Māori world view and acts as the central hub for teachers and learners seeking te reo Māori online resources. Through using the new imagery and developing a user-centric solution, we created a pathway for visitors of the site to interact with as they go on the journey to find teaching resources.

Culture, language, and identity is instrumental in Māori enjoying success as Māori, and so was at the heart of the Kauwhata Reo, a project that will develop into being the centralised spot for all te reo Māori learners and teachers.

Silverstripe confirmed for us early on that we had chosen the right partner to design and develop our education platform, because our core values and the needs of our users were front of mind from the beginning
