Key benefits of web-based applications

Easily share the data with people outside the physical office. Traditional databases only operate on LAN compatible protocols, making it very difficult for people who are not on the local network to access the database. This can be solved by technologies such as Terminal Services or VPN, but both of these solutions are slow and very expensive.
Collaborate with others. With traditional databases, it is only feasible to share a “read only” version of the data with people who may be interested in it, despite the fact that 3rd parties may have a legitimate reason to update the data. For example, if you want to check that a customer’s records are correct, you could send them a report or template email of their records, but you would have to manually update their record when they reply. This is both tedious and very inefficient.
Personalize the user interface. Traditional databases systems have a number of different users, who use the database in different ways. The ideal interface will dynamically adapt and change to suit the way any particular user wants to work.
Visually represent infomation. Traditional databases have been designed to represent data in tables, grids and simple forms. However data can usually be better understood graphically, for example, presenting data in graphs or even presenting it geographically on a maps. Traditional database software was never designed to represent data in these ways.
