Customising the error page

Hi, I need to customise the error page on my site...well, I actually just want to remove the nav from this page, but since it is based on page.ss I can't seem to do this.
The site is up (with a splash page / no navigation) and can't go live till a certain date, but if you type in anything after the domain you get the 404 error page which has the rest of the site nav on it.
Any ideas?
