Gallery module compatibility with i18n module

I'm currently building a site using the i18n module o create a translated version of the site, but I'm having problems getting the gallery module to work.
It installs fine, you can set all the options in the CMS fine, but the gallery just doesn't appear on the page at all (Specifically, it doesn't seem to be able to pass the <% if CurrentGalleryItems %> block in the template). I've spent the last 4 hours trying to play around with the code and write it from scratch, but to no avail. I've also tried using the trunk version of the module but the same problem occurs there.
Any ideas why these two SS modules aren't playing nicely?
