Yesterday, the Creative Freedom Foundation launched. What is it? It's a group of Kiwis raising awareness around some terrible legislation that's set to go into law in about two months' time.
The CFF is focusing on the "Guilt by accusation" amendments to New Zealand copyright law. From their press release:
The Creative Freedom Foundation's first campaign is against a proposed law in New Zealand: Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act. S92 assumes 'Guilt Upon Accusation' - cutting off internet connections and websites based on accusations of Copyright infringement, without evidence or even a trial.
Foundation Co-Founder and Director, Bronwyn Holloway-Smith says: "The result of this law could be that one rogue employee or even one virus infected computer could bring down a whole organisation's internet and it's highly likely that schools, businesses, hospitals, and phone services will be harmed by this."
On 28 February 2009, S92 will come into effect in New Zealand if there is no positive action on the part of the Government to change it. To date the Government has shown support for the bill and, unless there is major public protest against it, it will "roll over" in to law.
If it goes through, this will expose businesses in New Zealand to undue risk. When businesses are trying to increase the amount of exports from New Zealand and compete more effectively in a global market, why hamper one of critical lifelines -- Internet-based business? It simply does not make sense.
The CFF has a "What can I do?" page with more details. Please check it out and sign the petition. New Zealand simply cannot afford to let this go through. Thanks.

I wish I was a kiwi so I could protest this craptastic legislation. Keep it up!

Good to see SilverStripe supporting the efforts of the Creative Freedom Foundation in raising awareness of these quiet changes of Copyright Law for the worse, and speaking out for content creators who are clearly saying "Not in my Name" - this law ain't for us!
As a content hosts and webmasters the new laws will directly affect many NZ businesses that run or maintain websites for others - being required by law to take down a site or internet connection on an accusation - rather than on a court order.
Cheers SilverStripe.
